Which German uber-saloon is fastest: The BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63S or rather complicatedly-named Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid?

All have 4.0-litre V8 engines with two turbochargers attached, and all are big executive cars, and all have four-wheel drive, but beyond that they go about things in slightly different ways, as we'll explain.

But only one can be quickest through 60mph, 100mph, a standing 1/4 mile and a standing 1/2 mile. Question is, which one?

We strap our timing gear to them, and run them head-to-head in an old-school shootout.

A shame...

... they didn't include a RS6 Performance for reference. Another magazine managed 60 in 3.3, 100 in 7.7 and 1/4 mile in 11.5. Sadly no second decimal available so I've no idea how rounded those decimals are. The bottom line is that someone who owns any of the cars isn't going to find performance wanting. Probably with the exception of the Porsche, there's more to be lost on reaction time than once underway.

I’m driving a 970 e-hybrid

I’m driving a 970 e-hybrid and drove the 971 at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone a couple of weeks ago - a joy.

Still a heavy beast but in sport+ I easily kept up with my buddy in his M4 on a twisty A road.  I reckon the Turbo e-hybrid would certainly teach the M5 a few tricks....

The Merc is a lump but does

The Merc is a lump but does sound fantastic.  As for the M5, it looks like a 5 series, a bit dull with no "presence", like most BMW's. Not that I'm a Porsche fan!

For those of us who aren't porsche fanboys...

...the 970 is a Mk I Panemera, 971 a Mk II. Yes, I had to google it. I quite like Porsches, but not to the extent of quoting internal codes.
