Spectacular examples of the Lamborghinis Espada and Islero toured Italy last week to celebrate the models’ 50th anniversary.

Lamborghni Polo Storico is the unit of the company dedicated to the restoration and certification of Lamborghini models that have been out of production for at least ten years, and they organised the tour.

Starting in Perugia in central Italy, the tour comprised 20 cars and visited the provinces of Umbria, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, including the picturesque towns of Orvieto and Assisi, before arriving at Lamborghini headquarters at Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Highlight cars of the tour include a 1973 Espada Series 3, bought used in the UK in 1977 and used as a daily driver since. Another Espada was a Series 2, which travelled from Norway.

Lamborghini Espada

The Espada was the first true four-seater Lamborghini, with Bertone style on a conventional steel platform frame. It featured all-independent suspension and all-disc brakes, with a luxurious trim. Its signature elements were a very large rear window, vast open-up front bonnet and wheel covers, and four exposed headlamps.

The car featured a 3.9-litre 325bhp V12 at first, but the 350bhp of the Series 2 and 3 ushered in a 155mph top speed. The Series 2 launched in 1970, with chassis improvements and a much neater facia layout. 1217 examples were made up until production ceased in 1978.

Lamborghini Islero

The Islero is much rarer, having only been produced in 1968 and 1969. It replaced the 400GT and was first seen at the 1968 Geneva motor show. It shared the same V12 engines with the Espada, with the more powerful 350bhp variant featuring in the Islero S that appeared in 1969.

Top speed of the S was 161mph, with a 0-60 time of 6.2sec. Just 125 Isleros were produced, along with another 100 Islero Ss.

Lamborghini Islero S

This yellow British entrant is a 1968 Islero S, a rare right-hand-drive example. A 1969 Islero S featured in the cult Roger Moore film The Man Who Haunted Himself, made in 1970. Just five Islero S examples were made in right-hand drive.
