As Chery, Leapmotor and MG join VW, Ford and Stellantis in Spain, we ask: what makes it a car-building paradise?

News that MG chose Spain as the location of its first greenfield factory in Europe under Chinese ownership has prompted some soul-searching here in the UK, given our historic claim to the brand. 

Spain is attracting significant automotive investment, particularly from the Chinese. Mainly they’ve been hoovering up excess capacity from established car makers: Chery has taken over Nissan’s Barcelona factory, Leapmotor is poised to build in Stellantis’s Zaragoza plant as well as taking on its Madrid facility and Ford is said to be talking with Geely about sharing its Kuga plant in Valencia.
