Tapered roofline gives iX3 sibling a more aggressive look and improves aero efficiency

The BMW iX4 has been revealed as the more rakish sibling to the iX3.

Its coupé-style roofline reduces drag compared with the square-backed iX3, improving its range. For example, the iX4 50 is officially capable of driving 514 miles between charges, an improvement of 17 miles compared with the equivalent iX3.

The extra range comes at a cost of 30 litres of boot space, owing to the tapered shape of the iX4's 490-litre boot.

It is fitted with a small duck-tail spoiler, which helps to manage airflow efficiently and gives the iX4 a more sporting look.

In keeping with the coupé derivative’s more extroverted character, it will not be offered in the same nameless entry-level trim as the iX3. The more aggressive-looking M Sport trim will be standard.

Two powertrains will be available when the iX4 arrives in the UK next March. The entry-level 40, priced from £60,170, offers 369bhp, 383lb ft and a 396-mile range. The 50, which kicks off at £66,075, has 463bhp, 476lb ft and 514 miles of range.

They will be joined soon after by the M60 derivative, which will rival the Tesla Model Y Performance with outputs of 604bhp and 645lb ft, and a range of 483 miles.

The M60 also gets sports suspension with adaptive dampers as standard, a set-up that will be optional on the 40 and 50 variants.

Pricing for the M60 has yet to be announced, but it is likely to nudge nearer the £70,000 mark.
