Renault brand design boss Gilles Vidal has moved to Stellantis to become the group’s head of design for Europe.
In his new role, Vidal will oversee the creative direction of all Stellantis's European brands, with models spanning segments from city cars to vans.
Vidal moved to Renault from Peugeot in 2020 and has been a key figure in what could be seen as one of the most impactful periods, especially in design terms, in Renault’s history.
During his tenure, model launches included the bold new Renault 4 crossover and Renault 5 supermini, as well as the updated Clio - currently Europe’s best selling car of 2025. Its replacement is set to be revealed at the Munich motor show.
At Stellantis, Vidal replaces Jean-Pierre Ploué and will begin the role on 1 October. He will report to Jean-Philippe Imparato, Stellantis CEO for the enlarged Europe region.
It marks another big loss within the wider Renault Group, after CEO Luca de Meo stepped down last month.
Vidal’s career began at Citroën in 1996 (the French firm was then owned by the PSA Group, which would merge with FCA in 2021 to become Stellantis) before he moved to sibling brand Peugeot.
According to the group, he was “instrumental in shaping some of the most acclaimed vehicle designs of the past decade”. These included the Peugeot 308, 3008 and 208, all of which won European Car of the Year gongs between 2015 and 2019.
On his return, Vidal said: “As I join Stellantis back, I am enthusiastic to return to my roots.
"In a world where technology and design should walk hand in hand to transform customer experience, I am excited with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
"I look forward to tackle them by working closely with Jean-Philippe, [Stellantis design chief] Ralph [Gilles] and their teams.”
Imparato said: “We are thrilled to welcome Gilles back to this key role. His deep understanding of European automotive culture and his forward-thinking design philosophy will be essential as we continue to redefine mobility and strengthen the identity of our European brands."
He added: “I take this opportunity to thank Jean-Pierre Ploué for his team spirit and his invaluable contributions to Stellantis.”
