A hidden element in the success of Chinese brands in the UK is the role of the dealers. Brands such as BYD, MG and Chery understood that establishing a good ground game was key to converting curiosity to sales, and they moved quickly to build networks.

Dealers are very good at selling new cars, but that’s not where they make the bulk of profits. Those come from aftersales – and EVs are threatening that.
