Latest car from DS will only be available in China, and joins a growing range of cars from the premium French brand

The all-new DS 4S, which will be exclusive to the Chinese market, has been revealed at the Beijing motor show. The DS 4S is the fourth model to join the DS range in China, which also includes the DS 5, DS 5LS and DS 6.

The DS 4S will be offered with two 1.6-litre petrol engines, the THP 160 and the more powerful THP 200, which produces 200bhp. A third engine, the 1.2-litre Puretech 130 currently used in UK cars, also makes its debut for the Chinese market. DS will also offer its latest EAT6 automatic gearbox with all three engines.

Inside, the DS 4S has a handcrafted leather dashboard and a new centre console and steering wheel.

DS says the all-new 4S is longer than the UK's DS 4 to cater to the needs of the Chinese market.

Mules?

Another car that, in all likelihood, won't in any way exemplify the putative brand values for the DS marque, unless these values are limited to plush leather upholstery and slightly quirky interiors. At least it's not coming to Europe. As I understand it, there will also be a China-only DS9, based on the new China-only C6, which is in turn based on the Dongfeng Fengshen A9. I hope I'm being overly pessimistic, but this lineage doesn't encourage me to expect a great deal, dynamically at least.

It's not based on the 308

It's a hatchback version of the DS 5LS, which is based on the old PF2 platform that underpins the DS 4 and the Citroen C4. The wheels are the big giveaway. They have four bolts, while the cars based on the newer EMP2 platform have five bolts. Probably explains why they're not bringing it to Europe - it's not exactly 'premium' to ride on a 15 year old platform that wasn't even particularly accomplished when brand new.

I thought it looked like a 308 as well. I rather like it though, better looking than the DS4 we get.
