Currently reading: 6 reasons to be excited for Renault Twingo E-Tech electric

With eye-catching looks, a clever interior, and a very attractive expected price, Renault Twingo is one of the most exciting cars on the horizon.

Reviving an old name from your past is fraught with risk if you’re a car maker. People look back at their old cars with misty-eyed fondness, and bringing back a much-loved name risks the ‘it was better in my day’ crowd labelling it as a pastiche. It’s a risk that Renault has taken twice now, with Renault 4 and Renault 5 E-Tech electric, both of which have been smash hits. However, Renault Twingo E-Tech electric has the potential to be the biggest success of them all.

As with Renault 4 and Renault 5, Twingo has ultramodern looks that hark back to those of the original Twingo back in 1992, but shrouded in the contemporary clothing lies a cutting-edge powertrain, modern-day practicality, and an interior that gives every single journey a sense of fun. It’s small, stylish, and competitively priced.

Here are six reasons why we’re excited about Renault Twingo E-Tech electric.

1# Style, character and design

Just look at it. The new car is unmistakably Twingo. The rounded, full-LED headlights give it a wide-eyed appearance, and the smiling grille conveys a sense of happiness. It’s a car that brings a sense of joy to your daily journeys, and people can’t help but get caught up in that joy as you drive past in such a cheeky, cheerful machine. No wonder it’s been nicknamed “Le Frog” in France, such is the cartoon-amphibian nature of its front end looks.

The style doesn’t stop at the front, either, because Twingo has a proper wheel-at-each-corner stance, and there are similarly sassy arched lights at the rear. How Renault has managed to cram quite so much effervescence into a vehicle that’s just 3.79 metres long is a marvel.

2# Fun interior with tactile touches

There’s no point in having a car that shouts ‘I’m fun, drive me’ if you get inside and all the joy evaporates in a sea of blandness. There’s no such issue with Renault Twingo E-Tech electric, because the inside is just as invigorating and engaging as the outside.

The cabin features colourful elements that give it a bright, welcoming feel, while the roof lining is etched with the alphabet and symbols in the unique Twingo font.

Front and centre sits a large 10.1-inch touchscreen that has Google(1) built-in. That means you can use features like Google Maps without connecting your phone. What’s more, because it’s built-in, Google Maps knows how much range you have, and can automatically plan a charging stop on a long journey if you need it.

It also features Google Assistant, so you can talk to your Twingo, and even control elements of the car – like the temperature – with a simple voice command. The inclusion of Google’s Play Store means there’s a choice of loads of apps to download, such as Waze, Spotify and EasyPark.

The digital driver’s display screen is clear, and features fonts and graphics that are cheerful to the eye. And Renault has also made sure Twingo has physical dials and buttons for the air-conditioning, which makes it all a doddle to use on the move.

3# Unexpected practicality and sliding rear seats

When putting together the design of Twingo, Renault wanted a car that was small on the outside but which felt big on the inside. It has certainly managed that.

As What Car?’s testers said: “Six-footers will be comfortable in the front, thanks to generous headroom and seats that slide back a long way.”

But Twingo doesn’t stop there. What Car? adds: “An unusual feature for the class is sliding rear seats. These allow you to prioritise boot space or legroom according to your needs.” And as with the front, a pair of six-foot-plus occupants will be quite happy in the rear of Twingo.

Because those rear seats slide forward, Twingo is able to offer a hugely impressive 360 litres of boot space, a fraction more than even Renault 5. There’s also a hidden area beneath the boot floor to store valuables and your charging cables.

So, while Twingo might look like it’s all about fun, fun, fun, it actually does the serious side of life very well, too.

4# City-friendly driving

If ever a car was built to thrive in the city, Renault Twingo E-Tech electric is that car. It measures less than 3.8 metres from front to rear and has a turning circle of less than 10 metres, which means it has the sort of agility usually exhibited by scooters.

The pure-electric drivetrain is perfect for inner-city travels, because it produces a punchy 80hp and hustles Twingo from 0-31mph in just 3.8 seconds. While doing so, it makes the very most of the 27.5kWh battery, because it can do up to 163 miles(2) between charges, so top-up stops will be a rarity if you do the average daily UK mileage of 20 miles.

Talking of charging, Twingo can be charged at a competitive 50kW rate, which means a top up from 10-80% takes just half an hour(3).

That’s all the bits you can’t see covered, but what about those you can see. Or more accurately, see through. Yes, Twingo has a large glass area that makes it easy to judge the car’s extremities, and given that those extremities are pretty much close enough to touch, parking is a cinch.

5# Plenty of safety features

Twingo might be the smallest car Renault produces but it is full of the sort of safety equipment(4) usually reserved for larger, more expensive cars.

So, there are parking sensors at both ends, and which look to the sides to help you gauge parking manoeuvres. However, if you’d rather let Twingo take care of things, there’s an optional system on the top trim that will reverse-steer the car into a space without you touching the wheel – all you need to do is operate the brake and accelerator.

And when parked, Twingo still has its eyes fully open and can tell you if there’s something approaching when you’re about to exit the vehicle.

On faster dual carriageways and motorways, the blindspot warning system will give you plenty of warning if someone has sneaked up beside you, and can also warn you that there’s a faster car approaching in the lane you’re about to move into. The adaptive cruise control system is also on call to keep you a set distance from the car in front, even if that car slows down ahead of you.

6# Exceptional value

Prices are yet to be completely confirmed, but Renault has been clear about the fact it wants Twingo to start at less than £20,000.

Entry-level Evolution trim is very well appointed, with a 10.1in touchscreen, a 7.0in digital driver’s display. and air-conditioning. Techno trim comes with 18in alloy wheels, climate control, a rearview parking camera and even one-pedal driving. Other features across the range are also quite high-end, with heated seats and a vehicle-to-load function that allows you to use your car’s battery to power devices such as a laptop or a hairdryer.

Summary

Renault Twingo E-Tech electric has the potential to revolutionise the small-EV marketplace when it arrives, because it offers a unique blend of eye-catching pricing, ultra-low running costs, everyday usability, comfort and plenty of standard equipment. Add in the sort of looks that make everyone glance twice, and you’re looking at a star in the making. Its ancestor would be proud.
